Arayat is nestled at the foothill of Mount Arayat, home of the beautiful fairy, “Maria Sinukuan,” who, according to the legend protects the mountain’s flora and fauna. At the foot of the mountain is the Mt. Arayat National Park, whose recreational halls, picnic sheds, swimming facilities are frequented by the tourists all year round.
Before the Spaniards came, the town of Arayat was known as “Balayan ning Pambuit,” an ancient settlement was originally located at Barrio Panlinglang (the present poblacion that used to be jungle inhabited by the Aetas). The town was renamed “Dayat” (which means irrigated farmlands), while the mountain was originally known as Bundok ning Alaya (which means eastern mountain).
