Governor Delta lauds SMC’s Support for Pampanga River Desilting Project

MANILA — Governor Dennis “Delta” Pineda lauded the initiatives of Ramon Ang, chairman of San Miguel Corporation (SMC) in supporting the desilting of the downstream section of the Pampanga River.

This came as SMC, Governor Pineda, other chief executives from Bataan, Navotas, and Cavite signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) together with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for the Adopt a River Program, as part of the corporate social responsibility of SMC.

He said that the recurring issue of flooding has long been a concern for many Kapampangans, particularly those living in areas adjacent to the Pampanga River.

“Hirap na hirap pong lumabas yung tubig coming from the municipalities dahil silted po yung Pampanga river natin. Ang solusyon po talaga is malinis at madesilt po ito,” the governor said.

The governor added that this initiative will also play a vital role in assisting the National Government in effectively addressing the long-standing flooding problem in Pampanga.

According to Ang, this initiative not only highlights SMC’s commitment to nation-building but also showcases their dedication to environmental stewardship and the preservation of the country’s rivers, which have suffered from pollution and neglect due to human activities.

“In one decisive move, we will clean up the Pampanga River. San Miguel is doing this as a public service at no cost to the Philippine government or taxpayers. This initiative demonstrates our commitment to nation-building and making a positive impact on people’s lives,” Ang said.

The DPWH has also pledged its support for the program by utilizing its flood control programs and prioritizing desilting in bodies of water that require immediate attention.

Reports have it that the project is set to begin in 2024, pending the submission of the DPWH’s engineering design and the necessary permits being approved.

The “Adopt a River Program” encourages government agencies, private sectors, communities, and organizations to take responsibility for the preservation of bodies of water in order to protect aquatic ecosystems.
