Gov recognizes women’s role in nation building

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – Gov. Lilia “Nanay” Pineda yesterday recognized the role of women in nation building, as she led the opening of the Women’s Month celebration in the province.

The governor encouraged all Kapampangans to support women empowerment, gender equality and recognize their contribution in nation building and vital role in the society.

She said the event is a commemoration of the sacrifices of women who give birth, take care of the future generation, manage the household and who lead the families, communities and the nation as a whole.

“Women nowadays give light not only to the family but the whole nation. We have penetrated politics and promoted motherly approach in leadership. Women empowerment should be celebrated not only this month but throughout the year,” Pineda said.

Dressed in violet, lady vice mayors headed by Angeles City Vice Mayor Vicky Vega-Cabigting and councilors in the province joined the event.
Cabigting said supporting women empowerment is a step towards progress and development.

“Nation building is a responsibility of both men and women. We must encourage more women in government and promote women’s education,” said Cabigting.
First District Board Member Cherry Manalo, chairperson of the committee on women and family, said women can now work hand-in-hand with men in all aspects.

“Gone are the days when women were only shadows of men. Women now play an important role in building healthy families and productive communities,” she stressed.

According the Philippine Commission on Women, this year’s celebration theme “Juana ang Tatag Mo ay Tatag Natin sa Pagbangon at Pagsulong” pays tribute to the strong and resilient “Juanas”.

“The theme highlights women as drivers of change who untiringly volunteer themselves in times of disaster, conflict, and calamity and recognizes the role of women in the rehabilitation process and their over-all contributions to progress,” Manalo said.

As part of the celebration, the provincial government sponsored free check-up, pap smear and flu vaccination to all lady capitol employees.• JENNA LUMBANG
