Gov eyes construction of provincial evacuation center in Magalang

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – Gov. Lilia “Nanay” Pineda is eyeing for the establishment of a provincial evacuation center owned by the provincial government that will accommodate displaced residents during the disaster period.

The governor said, the provincial government will seek the assistance of the National Housing Authority (NHA) for the construction of a big evacuation center with beds that can accommodate at least 500 families.

The provincial evacuation center, according to Gov. Pineda can be constructed in a ten-hectare lot owned by the government, located at barangay Sta. Lucia in Magalang town.

This plan came when the governor witnessed the poor condition of the affected families who were displaced as their houses were inundated by cascading floodwaters.

“These affected families are staying in makeshift tents along earth dikes, barangay hall, public schools and even in covered courts.

Pineda said, evacuation centers in every barangay are too small to provide comfort. It is also unhealthy because contagious diseases can easily transfer from one person to another.

“The proposed plan for the provincial evacuation center includes the construction of comfort rooms and kitchen,” the governor said.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) will also create a system for a faster way of transferring flood-hit families to evacuation centers.
