Gov. equips purok leaders for disaster vigilance

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO—Governor Lilia Nanay Pineda on Friday met with the 3,600 Purok Chairmen of the four districts, this province, for the “Disaster Summit” to address the roles and functions of the said leaders in their barangays.

The lady governor said that as managers to their neighborhood, purok leaders should be the first responders in any given situation together with the bantay bayan and barangay officials which contribute a big help to the community.

The governor also announced that the incidents of illegal drugs in the province have diminished since their first meeting in March, this year.

“I’m happy to announce, that on our second meeting our problem on illegal drugs have decreased. With that, I thank all of you”, the governor said.

“Peace would not be achieved in our province without our efforts to stay united in helping one another and I am happy that among the 7 provinces in Central Luzon, Pampanga was acclaimed to be the most peaceful”, the governor said.

Governor Pineda also encouraged purok leaders to identify all their residents to determine how many children, senior citizens and bed-ridden that need priority during rescue operations in case a calamity occur.

During the assembly held at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center here, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council Office head Angelina Blanco stressed on the roles and functions of the purok leaders on peace and order, disaster management and information dissemination.

Blanco also introduced the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council’s (NDRRMC) project Disaster Information for Nationwide Awareness (DINA) through a video presentation.

Meanwhile, Dr. Jose “Jay” Rivera, head, Trauma Center and Neuro-surgeon of Ricardo P. Rodriguez Memorial Hospital Annex enlightened the purok leaderson the prevention and treatment of widespread diseases before, during and after a disaster.

Rivera said that a proven technique in eliminating morbidity and mortality is “simple handwashing”.

Board members Cherry Manalo, ABC League president and ex-officio Atty. Gerome N. Tubig, Crisostomo Garbo, Ricardo Yabut, Ferdinand Labung and Rosve Henson depicted the importance of disaster management and preparedness in the role of every purok leader in the barangays.

Also seen in the event were Board members Anthony Joseph Torres, Arthur Salalila, Arayat Mayor Bon Alejandrino, PML president Oscar Tetangco Jr., PNP Provincial Director Rodolfo Recomono, Jr., ex-Board member and Chief-of-staff Fritzie David Dizon, barangay officials, among others.
