Gov, DSWD to Turn Over 57 New Core Shelters to Landslide Victims in Arayat

ARAYAT — Governor Lilia G. Pineda and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Region III will turn over today (Monday) some 57 permanent core shelters to the victims of 2009 Mount Arayat landslide in barangay San Juan Bano in this town.

The DSWD has provided P70,000 each for housing materials with a total amount of P3,990,000 while the labor was shouldered by the provincial government.

Reports have it, that DSWD will also work for the construction of additional 100 core shelters while the provincial government will continuously support the project through providing the labor counterpart.

It will be recalled that in 2010, the governor has provided the victims with 64 bunk houses wherein the expenses for labor and materials was shouldered by the provincial government amounting to P5.7-million.

Governor Pineda said with the coordination of the provincial and municipal governments with the National Housing Auhority (NHA), the agency will provide some P10-million for the site improvement and development.

The governor disclosed that NHA will be in-charged for the construction of road pavement, water system, electricity and other facilities.

Other family victims will also be housed to the bunk houses vacated by the beneficiaries of core shelters provided by the DSWD.

It can be surmised that in 2009, hundreds of families were severely affected as their houses were buried by the sudden Mount Arayat landslide which killed 12 victims. (Elaine T. Mercado, PIO Pampanga)
