CHED: Treat Colleges as Economic Enterprise

By JENNA LUMBANG

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Central Luzon urged officials of local colleges to manage their school as an economic enterprise to sustain their operations.

This came, when CHED III Director Caridad Abuan, in a conference heard that budget is the major problem of local colleges that rely on the budget allotted by the local government units (LGUs) who created the school.

Abuan said the management should always find ways for the school to have income to be self-reliant and to sustain its subsistence.

However, she reminded them not to compromise the quality and affordability of the education and to uphold their mission of helping poor students to finish college.

“There are ways for the school to have income like operating school canteens and also efficient collection of reasonable fees. Scholarship should only be given to deserving students,” said Abuan.

The director advised school officials that subsidy from LGUs can be use to improve and construct facilities of the campus.

“Once self-sufficient, the school will no longer depend its operation to the budget from LGU, instead use the subsidy to upgrade school facilities,” Abuan stated.
